About Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C)

Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) works to safely remove, treat, and dispose of tank waste for the United States Department of Energy. H2C is in charge of the biggest and most complicated radioactive waste cleanup in the country, including the closure of waste tanks at the Hanford Site in Washington state. These tanks hold 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste leftover from plutonium production for the nation’s defense starting in World War II and through the Cold War.

In the future, H2C will also run parts of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant to finish treating and disposing of the Hanford tank waste.

Our team is focused on reducing environmental risks, speeding up the process of dealing with tank waste, and cutting costs. We aim to solve the Department of Energy’s biggest environmental challenge, leaving a positive impact for future generations.
