Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW)

The Hanford Site is reaching an important cleanup goal. The site is now treating tank waste through the Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste program, or DFLAW. The “direct-feed” process separates the most radioactive parts from the rest of the waste. The less radioactive waste, called low-activity waste, goes straight to the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant’s Low-Activity Waste Facility. There, it is turned into glass for safe storage.

DFLAW is made up of several connected projects and site upgrades that all work together to turn low-activity waste into glass. Supporting DFLAW means improving Hanford’s infrastructure and making sure all site contractors, including H2C, work as a team. DFLAW is the most coordinated project at Hanford and will help make sure waste is managed safely and effectively.
